The 5mm Standard: The validated Choice
Our 5.0mm precision engineered Orifice is the center of professional powder characterization.
Global Comparability: Most international standards including ISO 4324 and USP <1174> are built around the 5mm opening. Using this size ensures your results can be compared with labs and suppliers and your customers and clients worldwide.
Controlled Flow: A 5mm stream prevents 'Cone Collapse'. It allows particles to settle naturally, giving you a true measurement of the powder's internal friction.
Our Tip: Even for 'sticky' powders, we recommend using our included Stainless Steel Stirring Rod with the 5mm Precision Funnel. This maintains standard compliance while gently assisting the flow.
When to Choose a Larger Orifice (10mm - 25mm)
We know that in the real world, some industrial powders are extremely cohesive and simply will not pass through a 5mm opening. We offer larger custom engineered Precision Funnels with an Orifice Diameter of up to 25mm to ensure you can still complete your tests, however, test results may be outside of recognized Test Standards and primarily helpful for your laboratory's internal QC.
What you should know before choosing a larger size:
Beyond the Standard: Using a larger Orifice usually moves your test outside of recognized ISO/USP specifications. You are creating an 'Internal Standard' rather than a globally comparable one.
The 'Avalanche' Effect: A 10mm or larger stream is much heavier. The weight of the falling powder can compress the pile, often resulting in a slightly shallower angle than a standard test would show.
