The Izod Impact Strength Test was invented by Mr Edwin Gilbert Izod in 1903 and is similar to the Charpy Impact Strength Test.
The Charpy & Izod Impact Test uses a swinging Pendulum Arm which pivots and is lifted to a specified height. The pivoting Pendulum Arm is released and impacts on a specified sample to determine the Impact Strength. The energy which is absorbed by the sample is calculated from the specified height the Pendulum Arm is released. The Charpy Impact Test and the Izod Impact Test are similar test methods which differ primarily in the configuration of the Sample Holder System.
The Charpy Impact Test uses a Cantilevered Beam Installation and the Izod Impact Test relies on a Notched Sample Installation to measure the Impact Energy and the Notch Sensitivity. The Izod Impact Test releases a higher Impact Force compared to the Charpy Impact Test.
