Product Description:

Qualtech Products Industry Bulk Density Meter is a precision Bulk Density Volumeter ISO Method R 60 to determine the Bulk Density and the Apparent Density of loose sample products and loose sample materials including metal powders, chemical powders, pharmaceutical powders, food powders and related samples.

To measure the Bulk Density and the Apparent Density the sample is added into the specified funnel and passes through the funnel into the density cup with a specified volume. After the sample passes through the lower funnel the density is measured with a Density Cup and calculated by dividing the mass of the sample by the known volume of the cylinder.

This Bulk Density Volumeter ISO Method R 60 is a professional laboratory density test instrument to efficiently measure the density and the specific gravity of loose sample materials including carbon powder, fiber powder, cosmetic powder, cement powder, powdered food, powdered drying agents, metal dust and metal powder and related materials.

Bulk Density Meter ISO Method R60 - Precision Bulk Density Determination

 

The ISO R60 procedure determines the bulk density of metallic powders under standardized conditions of free fall and gravity packing. It quantifies how a powder occupies volume when poured through a calibrated funnel into a defined container, providing a reproducible measure of packing behavior and flowability.

 

Apparatus

  • QPI‑BDM1800R60 Bulk Density Meter, designed in accordance with ISO R60 specifications:

    • Funnel assembly: stainless‑steel funnel with a 25 mm orifice and a 60° cone angle, precision‑machined for consistent flow.

    • Receiving cup: 25 cm³ cylindrical container, internal diameter and height calibrated to ISO R60 tolerances.

    • Support frame: rigid alignment between funnel and cup, ensuring vertical discharge.

    • Base platform: adjustable leveling feet for horizontal setup.

  • Analytical balance: resolution ± 0.01 g.

  • Sample handling tools: scoop, spatula, and brush for cleaning between tests.

 

Principle of Operation

A metallic powder is allowed to flow freely through the funnel into the receiving cup under gravity. The mass of powder filling the known volume is measured, and the ratio of mass to volume gives the bulk density. The test reflects the powder’s particle size distribution, shape, and surface characteristics.

 

Test Procedure

1. Instrument Preparation

  • Ensure the QPI‑BDM1800R60 is clean, dry, and free of residual powder.

  • Level the base using the adjustable feet and a spirit level.

  • Confirm that the funnel outlet is centered directly above the receiving cup.

2. Sample Conditioning

  • Bring the powder to standard laboratory temperature (typically 23 ± 2 °C).

  • Mix gently to homogenize without altering particle size or moisture content.

3. Filling the Funnel

  • Close the funnel outlet using the supplied shutter or plate.

  • Pour the powder into the funnel until it is nearly full.

  • Avoid vibration or compaction during loading.

4. Initiating Flow

  • Remove the shutter quickly to allow the powder to discharge freely.

  • Do not tap or disturb the apparatus during flow.

  • Allow the cup to fill completely until flow stops naturally.

5. Leveling the Cup

  • Use a straight edge to strike off excess powder flush with the rim.

  • Maintain a smooth motion to avoid compressing the sample.

6. Weighing

  • Weigh the filled cup to the nearest 0.01 g.

  • Subtract the mass of the empty cup to obtain the net sample mass.

7. Calculation

Bulk Density (g/cm³) = Net Sample Mass (g) / 25 cm³

Report results to three significant figures.

8. Repeatability

  • Perform at least three measurements.

  • The variation between results should not exceed ± 1 %.
